Why Beyond the Sentence Exists
A new Wisconsin-focused publication built around accountability, public records, firsthand experience, and evidence.
Beyond the Sentence was created to examine what happens inside Wisconsin's criminal justice and correctional systems after the courtroom goes quiet.
The goal is not to publish accusations as facts. Reporting will distinguish documented evidence, verified facts, firsthand accounts, allegations, commentary, and developing information so readers can understand what is known, what is claimed, and what remains unresolved.
People who are incarcerated, their families, formerly incarcerated people, attorneys, advocates, correctional employees, policymakers, journalists, and members of the public can all possess pieces of information that matter.
Beyond the Sentence intends to connect those pieces through reporting, public records, source documents, interviews, legal and policy analysis, and the Beyond the Sentence podcast.
Accountability also requires fairness. When reporting concerns identifiable people or institutions, Beyond the Sentence will seek relevant records, corroboration, and meaningful opportunities for response whenever circumstances allow.
The central principle is simple: what a publication knows is not automatically what a publication should publish. Evidence, context, public interest, source protection, and responsible editorial judgment come first.
