Reporting beyond the walls, beyond the paperwork, and beyond the official statement.
Beyond the Sentence is an independent Wisconsin-focused journalism and advocacy platform examining incarceration, corrections, reentry, criminal justice, public policy, and the people affected by those systems.
The publication is built around a basic idea: important information should not disappear simply because the people who possess it are incarcerated, recently released, ignored, intimidated, or outside traditional media networks.
We combine public records, firsthand accounts, documentary evidence, legal and policy analysis, interviews, source submissions, and independent reporting to examine what happens inside Wisconsin's correctional system and what happens after people return home.
Why this publication exists
Correctional systems operate with enormous power over people's lives while much of what happens inside those systems remains difficult for the public to see.
Families may struggle to understand policies. Incarcerated people may have limited ways to document what they experience. Formerly incarcerated people may possess firsthand knowledge that rarely reaches policymakers or traditional newsrooms.
Beyond the Sentence exists to investigate those gaps while maintaining standards for verification, fairness, sourcing, and corrections.

Lived experience is a source of knowledge.
Beyond the Sentence recognizes that people who have experienced incarceration often understand parts of the system that are invisible from the outside.
Lived experience matters, but it does not replace verification. A firsthand account is identified as a firsthand account. Allegations remain allegations until evidence supports treating them differently.
Our goal is not to diminish powerful testimony, but to publish it responsibly.
Accountability in every direction
Accountability reporting can involve government agencies, correctional institutions, employees, contractors, courts, policymakers, organizations, programs, and individuals. The same expectation applies to Beyond the Sentence: our work should be evidence-based, transparent about uncertainty, open to correction, and clear about the distinction between reporting and commentary.
Information from sources
Sources may submit tips, documents, firsthand accounts, concerns, leads, and evidence for editorial review.
Submission does not guarantee publication. Information may be investigated, corroborated, withheld, anonymized, declined, or used as a lead for additional reporting.
